Toyota To Recall Over 1.35 Mln Cars GloballyToyota Motor Corp announced that it would recall over 1.35 million Vitz and two other models worldwide in order to fix up a fault in the seatbelt, a part in the exhaust system or both.

The company said that in Japan 525,898 Vitz, Belta and Ractis cars built from January 2005 to April 2008 are subject to the recall.

According to company reports, it will also recall a joint 830,000 divisions of the Vitz subcompact, called Yaris in various markets, and Belta exported to Europe, North America and other markets.

According to Toyota, a single case of fire was reported in Japan because of the defective seatbelt design that could cause a noise-absorber device to liquefy when the seatbelt tensioner get activated during a collision.

No accidental case was reported in Japan from the defective exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) pipe that could break in the worst-case situation and give rise to exhaust gases, which fail to clear emissions standards to leak.

The company declined to reveal the estimated cost of the recalls.

Its shares ended flat at 2,980 yen compared with a 1.0 per cent rise in the transport equipment subindex.
