SpiceJet hikes air fares
The low-cost carrier SpiceJet has announced to hike fuel surcharge on tickets by Rs 400 per passenger with immediate effect, making domestic air travel, a bit costlier.
The move came after similar hike announced by Jet Airways and Kingfisher Airlines yesterday in a bid to offset losses that may arise due to steep increase in prices of Jet fuel. Public sector oil marketing companies - IOC, BPCL and HPCL - had announced 12 per cent hike in aviation turbine fuel few days back.
Samyukta Sridharan, Chief Commercial Officer of the company said, "We have raised the fuel surcharge across all sectors by Rs400, effective immediately." He said that move may reduce some financial burden from recession hit company facing tough times due to global slowdown.
The aviation sector is passing through tough times due to slump in industry with increased costs and decreased traffic both at national and international level.
The state owned Air India Ltd is even facing difficulty in paying salaries to staff and has decided to pay last month's salary late by 15 days. Other national and international carriers may increase fares in coming days as per market analysts.
