Opera Uncovers Opera Mini 5 beta for Android
Opera Software on Thursday uncovered the Opera Mini 5 beta for Android, marking a spectacular improvement to the version 4.2 browser that had previously been available for Android.
The mobile browser is reported to also be available for Research In Motion BlackBerry smartphones and handsets that are operating Windows Mobile 5 or 6 or can run Java applications.
Opera claims its browser can compresses data by up to 90% prior to sending it to the phone, a feature that could assist when a phone is running on a low-bandwidth data connection.
The software does this by actually being a proxy-based browser that's connected to Opera's servers, which handle the compression remotely and then push the final results to the phone.
In addition, it is claimed that the browser is empowered to deliver a desktop-like Web experience familiar to PC users. Other add-ons include features as speed dialing, tabbed browsing, bookmarks, and a password manager.
Android phone users can download Mini 5 by visiting Opera's mobile Website, m. opera. com/next, with the standard Android browser. Apart from this, the browser can also be downloaded via the Android Market.
