Mozilla Starts Offering Firefox 3.6 upgrade to Users
Mozilla yesterday initiated with the offering of its newest Firefox 3.6 to users running older versions of the open-source browser, in a bid to encourage users to upgrade to the open source outfit's latest surfing tool.
Thursday's offer was the reported to be the first ever coordinated invitation to Firefox 3.6 that Mozilla has displayed to users of 2008's Firefox 3.0 and mid-2009's Firefox 3.5.
According to Mike Beltzner, the Director of Firefox, the offer screen appears after a minute of keyboard inactivity, so that the process does not ensure pop in the way of anyone's activities being carried.
However, the timing of the upgrade service is revealed to be same as to last year, when Mozilla waited about six weeks post to the debut of Firefox 3.5.
Also, it is posted that some Firefox users have shown reluctance to upgrade the browser as they fear of losing add-ons created in earlier versions that are not available in 3.6.
Firefox 3.0's share of Mozilla's browser usage market registered a plunge from 89% in June 2009, the month Mozilla unveiled Firefox 3.5, to under 2% in February 2010. During the same stretch, Firefox 3.5's share marked a rise from less than 2% to 60% last month.
