Monday to Mark Take-off of NPCIL and L&T Nuke Forgings Joint Venture

Monday, as confirmed by both the parties involved, will mark the takeoff of the proposed joint venture between Nuclear Power Corporation of India (NPCIL) and Larsen & Toubro (L&T) for making nuke forgings, an important part of the complete construction of nuclear reactors.
"NPCIL and L&T will announce the formation of the joint venture to manufacture nuclear forgings on Monday", it has been reported.
On May 21, 2008, Executive Director of NPCIL Sudhinder Thakur, had revealed that his firm and L&T are planning on forming a joint venture to undertake manufacturing of forgings. The estimated investment of the project was shared as between Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 2,000 crores. "The two companies have taken a decision to form the JV, but are yet to finalize other details", he has shared almost a year and a half back.
Forgings, an important component of nuclear reactors, help in withstanding the pressures which build inside the reactor, in addition to keeping dangerous radiation from escaping and getting to other areas of the plant, as well as surrounding areas.
NPCIL undertakes operation of as many as 17 nuclear power stations, with a capacity of 4,120 MW, which the firm plans on increasing to 20,000 MW by 2020.
