Japanese cars are most dependable: study

Cars manufactured in Japan are the most dependable, a study from California-based research firm J. D. Power & Associates suggests.

J. D. Power questioned owners of cars manufactured in 2009 about the type of problems they had been experiencing over the last one year. Respondents reported an average of 132 problems per 100 vehicles. The figure is down from 151 problems reported by vehicle-owners a year ago.

Matthew Stover, an analyst for Guggenheim Securities, said, “If your quality score are improving and demand is improving, that is good story for pricing.”

Lexus, the luxury division of Japan-based Toyota Motor Corp., emerged as the top performer in the survey. It scored the best of 32 brands as its owners reported merely 86 problems for every 100 cars.

Germany’s sports car manufacturer Porsche grabbed the second spot with 98 problems per 100 vehicles; while General Motors Co.’s luxury brand Cadillac tied with Toyota to grab the third spot, with 104 problems.

Toyota Motor Corp’s budget-oriented Scion emerged at the fifth spot with 111 problems per 100 vehicles.

Overall, Japanese brands grabbed three of the top five spot in the survey.
