Indian varsities should be allowed to hire foreign faculty: Montek
Indian varsities should be allowed to hire foreign faculty to ensure international flavour, the Planning Commission said on Friday.
Montek Singh Ahluwalia, deputy chairman of the Planning Commission, suggested that the government should lift restriction on recruiting foreign faculty in varsities.
Mr. Ahluwalia He added that it would be difficult for Indian varsities to make it to the top grade unless these educational institutions are permitted to hire international faculty.
Speaking on the topic, Mr. Ahluwalia said, "Unless this is changed, it will be difficult to make it to the top grade."
Under existing rules, Indian varsities can not hire faculty from foreign countries.
The top Planning Commission official also appreciated ratings agency Standard & Poor's views on the Indian banking sector, saying it corrected the pessimistic signals given by Moody's.
Standard & Poor's recently upgraded its rating on the Indian banking sector, saying that domestic regulations were in order with international standards.
Mr. Ahluwalia also stressed on the need to make sure that the economy is recovered from its current slower growth phase in the next fiscal year.
