Google offers API to developers
Internet major, Google has made available its Application Programming Interface (API) for developers and manufacturers to build energy monitoring devices for households.
The Powermeter tool's API can now be connect to the applications created by the developers in order to reduce costs incurred on monitoring energy usages in households. Google has said that the company aims at creating an "ecosystem" of developers so that information of efficient systems could be made available for households and businesses.
The offering could lead to the creation of more efficient and user friendly energy monitoring platform. A number of other companies are creating tools to help people analyze their household energy needs.
Google Product Manager Srikanth Rajagopalan said "With the launch of the API we are highlighting the core design principles towards integrating with Google PowerMeter."
Google PowerMeter is free software tool which has launched in the UK last year. It collects information from smart meters in household and then help users analyze their usage and wastage through graphs and other data on a iGoogle page.
Google's tool can be a significant step in making the energy systems more efficient as the company has a global presence.
