Domain Names to be available in Indian languages
Domain Names, currently available only in Latin characters and few IDN options, would be made available in Indian regional languages by June 2010. A domain name gives a particular identity to a user and helps to access a particular website by entering it in the address bar of a browser.
An official concerned with the development project said that ICANN and government of India have been looking for developing domain name in regional language and the result would be soon made available for the C-DAC site.
A C-DAC spokesman at the National Awareness Workshop, said, “We seek views and comments from all stakeholders, before the roll out of Domain Names in Indian languages by June 2010.”
C-DAC (Centre for Development of Advances Computing), GIST, Pune and DIT have been working to materialize the dream of providing domain names in Indian languages. A policy document is already underway with the close association of government of India. Work is said to have been completed over major 14 Indian languages and remaining eight would be taken up very soon.
