Delivery of N900 Started by Nokia
As confirmed by Nokia's Chief Executive Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, the company has, as of Tuesday, started deliveries of its latest top-of-the-line mobile phone - the N900. The model is being touted as one of the company's key products and looks to compete with the iPhone as well as the BlackBerry.
The mobile phone, which is expected to be priced at 500 Euros SIM-free, is the first phone to feature the company's much talked about Maemo 5 Linux-based operating system. Analysts are pegging the phone to be just the device needed by Nokia to break into the mobile devices market again and regain its supremacy.
Finland based Nokia, which had enjoyed being the undisputed king of the handsets market for very long, saw its position slipping with the coming in of companies like Apple and RIM. Although the firm's share in the market is still significant, nearly 40%, its high end, expensive models have been hurt by iPhones, BlackBerrys and other smartphones. With the N900, Nokia hopes to get a hold in that segment as well.
"The Nokia N900 has generated a lot of interest since its public launch in August, which has been reflected in the device pre-orders”, explained Luis Martinez, vice-president for Nokia N-series. It has been reported that the company is already working on a software update, but no confirmations have been made yet.
