Active installed base of iOS and Android on the increase worldwide
With several people getting a new smartphone during Christmas time, the post-Christmas period marks the busiest of app downloading days in a year; underscoring the increasing active installed base of iOS and Android!
It is pretty obvious that as soon as people get hold of their new smartphone - be it the hugely popular Apple iPhone, an Android-based handset, a Windows Phone 7 handset, or a BlackBerry -, they straight away want to begin loading their device with their favorite apps, free as well as paid ones.
With the popularity of the apps clearly on the increase, mobile analytics firm Flurry has pointed out that its study pertaining to the break down of the active installed base of iOS and Android in several international markets has revealed that both the platforms have jointly touched approximately 55 percent market penetration of the nearly 200 million potential buyers of smartphones in the US.
Going by the findings of the Flurry analysis, the US has emerged as a clear leader in terms of an estimated installed base, with the figures in the country reaching 109 million users, or 41 percent of the international market. China, with 35 million active users, ranks second; followed by the UK in the third spot, with 17 million users. Japan, France and Germany have nearly 10 million users each.
The report also mentioned that since Flurry has counted only the recently-used devices, its estimates are apparently half of the cumulative totals announced by Apple and Google, both of which count old devices also.
