33 Cases Heard in a Single Day at Delhi HC's First E-Court

delhi-e-courtOn December 15, 2009, Delhi High Court managed to create history when its paperless e-court heard as many as 33 cases in a single day. The first ever e-court was launched by the Capital's HC in association with Justice S. Ravinder Bhat. The aim of the special court, in addition to helping courts go green, is to try and deliver as speedy justice as possible, without any paper hassles.

Instead of bulky and dusty files mounting the judges' table, there was a sleek LCD screen and a touch-screen handbook for the judge. While the LCD screen displayed the list of cases to be heard for the day, the touch-screen handbook contained the entire case files.

"We will be able to get rid of our bulky files. Now we have to carry only a USB device or CD of our case, which is much easier", said Swagat Sharma, a lawyer who appeared in the e-court. The environment friendly initiative, which has got a thumbs-up from all lawyers and judges, will make hearing of cases much speedier then before. In a mere 2 hours, 18 cases were heard.

It has been reported that the system will very soon be available for other courts across India.
