24% Hike in PC Sales Recorded for Third Quarter

Recent official figures have revealed that for the July-September quarter this year, sales of personal computer across India recorded a 24% quarter-on-quarter rise. On the back of an increased demand, improving economic condition and PC sector's growth, total number of personal computer sold around the country for the aforementioned period was recorded as about 22 lakh.

Asserting that the year's third quarter saw a strong boost in consumer confidence, IDC India Country Manager Kapil Dev Singh said, "This performance underlines the recovery in the PC market".

An analysis of individual data revealed that desktops accounted for about two-thirds of the total sales, at 14.58 lakh units, and the remaining 7 lakh units were netbooks. PC shipments also recorded a rise for the third consecutive quarter, after sharply falling from 22.59 lakh for July-September 2008 to 15.60 lakh in October-December 2008.

"Commercial PC sales can be expected to steadily improve as the economy recovers. Even though the consumer PC segment recorded a faster 28 per cent growth, the industry will need to watch how the recovery in consumer PC shipments unfolds in the quarters ahead", IDC India lead PC analyst Sumanta Mukherjee said.

The computers market was dominated by HP with a share of 17.1%, with Dell and Acer closely following with shares of 11.3% and 11.1%, respectively
