1.79 Million Bales of Cotton for Exports Contracted by India
The marketing year of 2009/10, which had started in October, has seen about 1.79 million bales of cotton, where each bale was about 170 kg each, being contracted by India for exports. The demands have increased when compared to last year's demands and there is an increased demand in China as the production of the crop has been quite low there.
The domestic raw cotton production of China in this marketing year has been reported to be about 6.8 million tonnes and it is significant that it has seen a drop by almost 15 per cent which is about 1.2 million tonnes when compared to the production that was seen in the previous year.
It has been reported that the cotton exports of India are anticipated to increase by about 57 per cent, which comes to almost 5.5 million bales. Although there is a surge in the exports, only 29.5 million bales are to be harvested this year when compared to the 30.5 million bales that was harvested last year. The main reason of this is pointed to the fact that the floods and cyclones have destroyed the crops in the western and southern part of the country.
